How the Ontario market is set up

Online casino play in Ontario is a regulated market. Before a private site can operate in the province, it needs two things. The first is registration with the AGCO, which is the regulator. The second is a signed operating agreement, which comes from iGaming Ontario (iGO).

iGO publishes a directory of the authorized sites. That list helps when a site name is new to you and you want to know where it stands. OLG.ca is a different case: it is the government-run online casino.

Being on the Ontario side

Online play in Ontario is for people who are 19 or older and physically in Ontario. The age matches the door at the casino on Bay Street. The second part is about where you are when you play, so being on this side of the bridge is what counts. This guide covers Ontario rules only. It has nothing to say about online play on the Michigan side of the river, and it will not guess.

Sites without AGCO registration

Without AGCO registration, a site accepting players from Ontario is not operating legally in the province, however polished it looks. Checking is easy: search for the site in the iGO directory of authorized sites. If its name does not appear, keep that firmly in mind before going further.

How BetGuard works

iGaming Ontario operates BetGuard (betguard.ca). Signing up once blocks access to all of Ontario's regulated online gambling sites, including OLG.ca. The block lasts 6 months, 1 year or 5 years, or for whatever length the person picks.

Casinos that people visit in person, like the one on Bay Street, fall outside it. Those are handled by My PlayBreak, OLG's self-exclusion program, set up through the OLG Support Centre at 1-800-387-0098.

About the Ad links

Paid links appear on the home page in three spots, each labelled Ad: a menu button, a strip just under the opening screen and a box close to the bottom. All of them point to a single private online casino partner, which may be replaced, and it pays a commission to this guide. That partner is an independent business; it is not the Bay Street casino, Gateway Casinos or OLG. No bets are accepted and no accounts are opened through the guide.

Whatever site you end up on, you can look it up in the iGO directory of authorized sites first.

Questions

Quick answers

Is the online age the same as at the casino door?

The age is identical: to play online in Ontario you must be 19 or older, just like at the door on Bay Street. Being physically inside Ontario is also required.

Where can I see which sites are authorized?

iGaming Ontario publishes a directory of the authorized sites, so a quick look there settles the question. OLG.ca is the government-run online casino.

Does BetGuard reach the casino floor too?

Walk-in casinos fall outside BetGuard. Its reach is regulated Ontario online gambling sites, OLG.ca among them. To take a break from casino floors, use My PlayBreak, the self-exclusion program run by OLG, which blocks entry to every casino in Ontario.
